1. A growing general contractor had operated with a “homegrown” QuickBooks accounting system that did not track job costs or customer retentions, or provide any useful financial information. In fact, it was only good for paying bills and creating invoices, doing 80% of the work while deriving only 10% of the benefit of the effort expended. In addition, their CPAs were not only unable to provide them with an answer but were providing to the contractor’s bonding company financial statements that were not correct. Gustin Accountancy designed a contractor-specific set of features and reports, and trained the in-house office manager to operate the system, and today they have control over all aspects of their business. As icing on the cake, their bonding agent has commented that the quality of the financial statements has significantly improved his ability to obtain required bonding for the expanding business.
2. Two brothers, having sold their business nearly three years ago, bought a new business, a small manufacturer of specialty auto products. Having experience with much larger manufacturing and accounting control systems in their former business, they were concerned about moving their new company from a “whiteboard and checkbook” system to full manufacturing, purchasing and financial control within a short time after acquisition. After attempting for a short time to master QuickBooks Manufacturing and Distribution software themselves, they called on Gustin Accountancy to assist them, with only two weeks remaining before they were to acquire the new business.
Within one week (during the time of year when other accountants were buried under tax returns), Gustin Accountancy custom-designed a system that “tricked” QuickBooks into shop floor control that is not offered as part of the standard software.
Within a day of closing, accounting and shop floor control were in place, along with a draft of the operating procedures. The brother in charge of manufacturing has commented that he is very pleased with the level of control and ease of operation. Friends of his, who are also manufacturers, are astounded when he tells them he is running his business using QuickBooks.
3. A designer, reseller and installer of high-end security and fire alarm systems, who counts among his customers several banks, had recently separated from some partners and had been unable to keep up his accounting beyond sending invoices and paying bills. He admitted that he did not like accounting but really wanted to have information on his job costs. After catching up six months' worth of his accounting and preparing the tax return that included the separation from his partners, Gustin Accountancy performed all his accounting chores online until he was ready to take in back in-house.
